On the evening of May 11, 2023, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook Northern California, causing mild to moderate shaking in the surrounding areas. The earthquake’s epicenter was located near the town of Clearlake Oaks, which is about 120 miles north of San Francisco.
The earthquake was felt as far away as Sacramento and San Francisco, but there have been no reports of major damage or injuries at this time. However, some residents reported feeling the shaking for several seconds and described it as a sharp jolt followed by sustained shaking.
Early the following morning, on May 12, a magnitude 5.2 aftershock hit the same area, causing additional shaking and minor damage to some buildings. Aftershocks are common after a large earthquake, and they can sometimes be nearly as strong as the original earthquake.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquakes were part of a swarm of seismic activity in the area that began on May 10. It is not uncommon for this region to experience earthquakes, as it lies along the San Andreas fault, which is one of the most active faults in the world.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to be prepared for additional earthquakes and to follow earthquake safety procedures. The USGS is monitoring the situation closely and providing updates as necessary.
