Aston Villa secured a crucial victory over Fulham in their Premier League clash on a tense evening at Villa Park.
The home side started the game strongly and took the lead after just 12 minutes through a powerful header from Anwar El Ghazi. The Dutchman met Matt Targett’s cross with precision, leaving Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola with no chance.
Fulham tried to hit back quickly, but their attacks lacked potency, and they struggled to break down a well-organized Villa defence. The hosts continued to dominate proceedings, and it was no surprise when they doubled their advantage just before half-time.
Again, it was El Ghazi who got on the scoresheet, this time after some impressive build-up play from Villa. John McGinn played a clever one-two with Ollie Watkins, before laying the ball off to El Ghazi, who finished with aplomb.
The second half saw Fulham come out with renewed vigour, and they created a few half-chances, but they were unable to convert them into goals. Villa, on the other hand, continued to threaten on the counter-attack, with Watkins and Trezeguet both going close to adding to their side’s tally.
Fulham’s hopes of a comeback were effectively ended in the 81st minute when their midfielder, Mario Lemina, was sent off for a second bookable offence. With a man advantage, Villa saw out the game comfortably, securing all three points and moving up to ninth in the Premier League table.
The result was a huge boost for Dean Smith’s side, who had been without a win in their previous three league games. Fulham, on the other hand, remain in the relegation zone and will need to start picking up points soon if they are to avoid the drop.
Overall, it was a solid performance from Villa, who looked dangerous going forward and resolute at the back. For Fulham, it was a frustrating evening, as they were unable to make the most of their opportunities and were ultimately undone by a clinical Villa side.
