Spencer Haywood was born in Silver City, Mississippi on April 22, 1949. He attended high school in Detroit, Michigan and was an All-State basketball player. After graduating from high school, Haywood attended Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado where he was a two-time Junior College All-American. He then went on to the University of Detroit for one season, and then joined the ABA’s Denver Rockets in 1969.
In the ABA, Haywood was named Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player. He also led the Rockets to the ABA championship in 1975.
