Indian Army Day: Introduction

1. Army Day Parade
On this occasion, a large parade is held in Delhi Cantonment’s Cariappa Parade ground. Various gallantry awards also given to the soldiers after the parade. Fifteen valiant soldiers received awards for bravery on Army Day 2020. The ParamVir Chakra and Ashok Chakra recipients also march in the parade.

Why January 15?
The Indian Army formally founded on April 1, 1895, and declared as one of the military holidays. However, the Army hired its first chief in 1949 after India attained independence. The official transfer of the Indian Army took place on this historic day. Lieutenant General KM Cariappa received the baton from General Sir Francis Butcher.
Lt Gen Cariappa led the Indian Army in the 1947 conflict on the western border with Pakistan. When he given the title of Field Marshal of India on January 14, 186, he rose to the position of second-highest ranking officer in the Indian military. Sam Manekshaw was the first officer to given this highest rank in 1973.
