World Forestry Day is observed on March 21st. This day is celebrated globally every year. World Forestry Day 2023 is dedicated to bringing awareness among people not to cut the trees in the forest and educating them on how forests are important for balancing the life cycle of all the species on earth.
Let us all take some time every year from our busy schedule and dedicate our time to educating our younger generations about the importance of Forests starting this year.
World Forestry Day Theme
The World Forestry Day Theme for 2023 is “Forests and Health.” Forests play a crucial role in helping humankind live a healthy life. Forests clean the air, purify the water, provide life-saving medicines, and provide food for all living beings. It also captures carbon to fight climate change; overall, it is important for our well-being. Our responsibility is to safeguard our precious natural resources and ensure that the next generations can live healthy lives.
Importance of Forests
- Along with human beings, there are many more whose life is dependent on the forest, like animals, birds, plants, microorganisms, etc.,
- Forests are the major natural resources of any country; therefore, one should protect the forests.
- Forests provide a livelihood to many tribes, and many precious medicines are available only in the forests.
- The industrial raw material is brought from the forests.
- Forest plays a crucial role in preventing soil erosion.
- The forest is also known by the name green lung since it absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen.
- Due to the thick plants’ Air Pollution can be prevented, and there is always fresh air.
- Forest also plays a prominent role in regulating the water cycle.
- The forest trees absorb carbon dioxide and fix it into the roots, due to which greenhouse gas can be emission which would protect from the worst climatic changes.
- Forests provide employment opportunities.
- We get food, medicines, wood, paper, fruits, and many more from the forests.
- Forests act as reservoirs of greenhouse gases.
Effects of Deforestation
- Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, and when the trees cut down, there will be carbon dioxide that causes global warming.
- There would be climatic changes affecting human life, wild animals, plants, and all the living beings on the earth.
- Deforestation harms biomass which in turn worsens climate change.
- There would be a lot of air pollution, causing many lung and breathing-related diseases.
- It would affect the making of medicines since there would not be any herbs.
- It would lead to soil erosion.
- Deforestation leads to wildlife extinction.
- It also causes underwater depletion causing cyclones.
- It would affect employment opportunities, and many people would become jobless.
- Deforestation also affects the water cycle.

World Forestry Day 2023 Activities
We can plan many activities on this day and contribute to saving our forests. I have a few ideas in my mind to share with you. So, I put down my thoughts here. So, friends, please take some time and let us know what activities can included in this World Forestry Day 2023.
- We can plant a few plants and encourage our family and friends to do the same as part of our initiation to protect our forests.
- Essay writing and elocution competition can conducted in schools and colleges so that the children can learn about the importance of forests in our lives.
- Painting competitions, poetry, and anything that can talk about the beauty of forests can considered competition.
- We can spread the message of saving our forests on social media and educate people with much information.
- TV and radio can also come forward and educate people about how our forests are important and how it is everyone’s responsibility to save them.
- We can go on a tour of forest areas, and we can spend some time with nature.
- We can call people from forest departments and can conduct guest lecturers so that people can understand the concept better.
- We can gift a plant to everyone in our neighbourhood.
- An exhibition can organized where all the important and precious things we get from our forests can shown to people.
- We can collect some money and distribute T-Shirts with the slogan of protecting our forests.
- Industrial trips can also made to the forests every year.
As our elders say, better late than never, so let us realize early how many trees we have already cut from our forests and how it has already affected Mother earth in many ways. Rather than thinking about gifting properties, let us gift the best health and life to the next generation.
It may not be possible for everyone to come forward and do something every day but atleast once in a while, we can initiate and do our best to protect our forests. When we come forward and do something, then automatically, we can see that many others would also come forward to join the hands and become part of our important mission.
The topics the kids study in their Social and Science books let them experience it. Let us see with a small initiative. I am going to do that: I would gift a plant on every birthday of my family member each year and tell them that it is their responsibility to take care of it.
